Antioxidants usually included in skin creams in the form of Vitamins A, C, E, they are capable of neutralizing the destructive effects if the tree radial molecule. They do this by sacrificing electrons to free radicals before they get a chance to wrest one from a healthy cell.
Ageing of the skin is genetically programmed. But it can be accelerated by certain environmental factors such as nicotine poisoning and, in particular, exposure to the sun’s rays. Areas of the skin regularly exposed to the sun, such as the back of the hands and the face, therefore look older.
When a skin cell is oxidized, it loses electrons and the ones that get aways are called ‘free radicals’.
Free radicals are actually destructive little molecules that cause photoaging, damage DNA and RNA, and contribute to skin cancer. The meaning of anti is ‘against’ and an ‘oxidant’ is something that accepts an electron. The cause damage to your body by wildly crashing into stable molecules in an attempt to fix themselves. This continuous process of free radicals crashing into stable molecules damages and cell membranes . That in turn distrupts the cell’s natural defenes. The best defense we have against free radicals are anti-oxidants which go on a search and destroy mission to neutralize them.
Vitamin E considered an antioxidant superstar. Vitamin E fights Free Radicals that lead to
oxidation in your body. The term Vitamin E describes a family of eight antioxidants, four tocopherols, alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-, and four tocotrienols (also alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-). Alpha-tocopherol is the only form Vitamin E that is actively maintained in the human body and is therefore, the form of Vitamin E found in the largest quantities in the blood and tissue.

When a molecule of Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) neutralizes a free radicals, it is altered in such a way that its antioxidant capacity is lost. The other antioxidant, such as Vitamin C, are of regenerating the antioxidant capacity of Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol).
Vitamin E is a very powerful antioxidant. In fact it has been shown to be one of the most potent biological antioxidants availables. Vitamin E provides tremendous benefit to diabetics. Vitamin E healing of cuts, sores, and abrasions on the skin.
The research indicates that natural-source Vitamin E remains in the body longer than the synthetic type.Natural Vitamin E is far better for your body than Synthetic Vitamin E.

Vitamin C is what is known as an antioxidant. Antioxidants protect skin by neutralizing free radicals, which would otherwise destroy skin and its components. These free radicals are stimulated by ultraviolet light and also occur naturally in the oxygen atmosphere. Free radicals break down the collagen and elastin found in skin, which are essential for keeping skin firm and healthy. Vitamin C is thought to strengthen collagen and elastin in the dermis (the deepest layers of the skin) that has been damaged by free radicals.
Vitamin C is a valuable antioxidant and protectant against photodamage that is created by sunlight in both the UVB and UVA bands. Topical vitamin C does not absorb or block harmful ultraviolet radiation like a sunscreen.
Vitamin C is the only antioxidant that has been proven to increase collagen synthesis. Collagen synthesis is essential to maintain healthy skin. Taking large amounts of vitamin C orally is of little benefit for reducing wrinkles because you cannot orally obtain high enough concentration of Vitamin C in the skin to notably increase collagen production. It inhibits skin aging caused by ultraviolet light and increases the production of the proteins collagen and elastin, which are necessary to maintain firm skin that does not sage or wrinkle.
L-Ascorbic Acid is the only form of Vitamin C the body can use and is more protectant against UVA and can have skin lightening as well as rebuilding healthy collagen fibers. Many companies have used derivatives of Vitamin C, such as ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium ascorbyl phophate. Derivatives are easier to stabilize, but they are not L-ascorbic acid, which is the only form of Vitamin C the body can use.
In poorly prepared or poorly stored skin care products, Vitamin C may already be oxidized by the time you apply it to your skin. Even when you apply "good" Vitamin C to your skin, it may become oxidized while on your skin. Both problem can be solved if Vitamin C is
1) properly preserved by sufficient amounts of protective substances.
2) quickly absorbed by the skin so that it has a chance to work while intact.
3) Vitamin C concentration in a product is high enough to create a substantial increase in Vitamin C levels in skin cells.
Look for products that contain stable L-ascorbic acid at a low pH and concentration (10% is good). Packing is important, too, as Vitamin C can oxidise very quickly when exposed to air and light. If you're buying a product that contains Vitamin C, look for one in an airtight brown glass bottle or metal tube, which will screen out light and prevent air from seeping in and breaking down the vitamin.
